What Is a Hand Dredge?

"A hand dredge is basically a pump that lets you suck up material from places you can't otherwise reach — under rocks, deep in cracks, down where the gold's been hiding since the last flood."

A hand dredge is the heavyweight of the hand-suction family: a 2-inch PVC barrel, a plunger on a long rod, and a proper wide nozzle. Same operating principle as the sniper dredge, but scaled up for volume. Where the sniper is a precision instrument for picking a single crack clean, the hand dredge is a production tool — it moves serious material, fast, with no motor and no fuel.

That "no motor" part is the whole reason this tool exists in the modern era. Motorized suction dredging is heavily restricted or outright banned across much of the country, and every bit of the Northeast has rules about it. A hand dredge gives you a meaningful fraction of a dredge's material-moving capability while staying in the hand-tool category — where the local rules allow it, which you must verify. More on that below, because it genuinely matters.

New to sniping? Build the 1½" sniper dredge first. It's cheaper, lighter, easier to use, and it fits our Northeast crevices better. Then build this one when you find yourself thinking "I wish I could move more material out of this hole." Most folks who snipe seriously end up owning both — the sniper for tight work, the hand dredge for the productive wide crevices. They complement each other; they don't replace each other.

Why the 8.5" nozzle is the real story
Notice the nozzle on this tool: 1" inside diameter and 8.5 inches long, versus the sniper's 5/8" × 6". That extra length is reach — you can get the intake down deeper into a crevice before the fat part of the barrel stops you. And the wider bore passes gravel that would jam a 5/8" nozzle solid. That combination is what makes this a production tool instead of a precision one.

Prospectors on the forums have long noted that finished construction jobs throw out piles of PVC end caps, elbows, and reducers. Ask politely at a jobsite or check a habitat-restore type salvage store. A friendly plumber's scrap bin can outfit this entire build for the price of the cement.

Build It — Step by Step

1Cut the barrel and sand the interior

Cut 2" PVC to ~26". Square cuts. Then sand the entire inside surface smooth — wrap fine sandpaper around a dowel or a broom handle and work the full length. Take down the mold seam. A 2" plunger has a lot of surface area riding that wall, and any ridge will score the rubber and kill your seal. This step takes ten minutes and doubles your plunger's life.

2Dry-fit the whole tool before any glue

Assemble barrel, reducer, nozzle, plunger, rod, and cap with no cement. Work the plunger up and down the full stroke. Check the plunger doesn't hit the reducer at the bottom of its travel, and that it doesn't pull past the guide cap at the top. Adjust lengths now, while you still can. Every builder who skips this step regrets it.

3Cement the reducer and nozzle

Primer, then cement, reducer into barrel and nozzle into reducer. Leave ~8.5" of nozzle exposed. Twist a quarter turn as you seat each joint to spread the cement evenly. Then let it cure fully — read the can, but figure 2 hours minimum before you put any pulling force on it. This tool generates more force than the sniper; a weak joint will fail.

4Shape the nozzle tip

Cut the tip at about 45° and sand every edge smooth, inside and out. The angle lets you work into a crack and scrape material toward the intake. Smooth edges mean you're not slicing your hands or snagging on rock. Some builders cut a shallow V or a couple of small notches in the tip to help break up packed material as they work — worth trying on your second build.

5Build the plunger on the rod

Washer, rubber disc(s), washer, then nuts either side to clamp. Tighten to compress the rubber so it spreads out snug against the barrel wall. Test by hand in the dry barrel: firm steady effort to move it, but not a two-handed fight. The nuts are your tension adjustment forever after — that's why all-thread beats a dowel.

6Install the check valve (optional — see next section)

If you're building the valve, now's the time, before the guide cap goes on. Skip it on your first build if you want to get to the creek faster; you can retrofit later.

7Fit the rod guide cap and handle

Drill the 2" cap dead center for your rod — free-sliding but not sloppy. Friction-fit it or secure with a small stainless screw so you can remove it for plunger service. Then attach your handle. Test the ergonomics with wet hands, gripping like you mean it. A 2" barrel underwater takes real pulling; you want a handle you can lean into without tearing up your palm.

8Drill relief holes and add a lanyard

Two or three 1/8" holes through the barrel wall near the handle end, above the plunger's top of stroke, to vent trapped air. Then drill a small hole through the handle and run a paracord lanyard. PVC floats. A 39-inch tool going down the creek at walking speed is a bad afternoon.

9Bucket test before you drive anywhere

Fill a five-gallon bucket with water, pea gravel, and sand. Pull. You want a solid slug of material coming up the barrel. Push to eject. Do this twenty times and watch for: plunger slipping, joints weeping, rod flexing, valve sticking. Fix it in the driveway, not two hours from home.

The Check Valve — The Upgrade That Makes This Tool Sing

Here's the problem with a plain suction tube: on the push stroke, some of what you just sucked up gets pushed back out the nozzle. You pull material in, then you shove part of it back where it came from. Annoying, and it costs you real productivity.

A check valve fixes this. It's a one-way gate between the nozzle and the chamber: material flows in on the pull, and the valve slams shut on the push so nothing goes back down the nozzle. Instead, the material exits through a discharge port up near the top, or you simply lift the tool out and pour it. The result is that every single pull stroke banks material.

The simple flapper valve

  1. Cut a rigid disc (PVC sheet or a cut-down cap) that fits snugly inside the barrel at the base, just above the reducer.
  2. Drill several large holes through it — you want plenty of open flow area, not one small hole.
  3. Cut a rubber flap (inner tube, gasket rubber) slightly larger than the drilled hole pattern.
  4. Fasten the flap along one edge only, on the upper side of the disc, with a stainless screw or rivet.
  5. On the pull stroke, suction lifts the flap and material flows through. On the push stroke, pressure slaps the flap down over the holes and seals them.
Even simpler: the store-bought inline check valve
A 1" PVC check valve from the hardware store's irrigation aisle can be plumbed inline between the nozzle and the reducer. Costs a few dollars more and saves you the fabrication. Just make sure you install it in the correct flow direction (there's an arrow on the body — it should allow flow from the nozzle toward the chamber) and confirm the internals will pass sand and fine gravel without jamming. Some spring-loaded check valves clog badly on grit; a simple swing or flapper style is far better for this job.
The check valve trade-off
A check valve adds a restriction and one more thing to jam. If you build one, keep the open flow area generous, use a flapper style rather than a spring style, and be ready to clear it. Build your first hand dredge without a valve, learn how the tool behaves, then retrofit the valve once you know what you want from it. Many prospectors run valve-less tools happily for years by simply lifting and pouring.

Field Technique

The hand dredge rewards a different approach than the sniper. You're not picking one crack clean with surgical precision — you're processing volume out of productive ground.

Where the hand dredge beats everything else

The bedrock sheet secret — worth the price of admission
A Nevada dredger passed this along and it's one of the best tips in prospecting: in late summer when the water's low, bedrock dries out and shrinks, opening up pockets and cracks. In the wet season, high water packs those cracks full of material, and as the clay absorbs water it swells and seals them shut. So: take a crowbar and a screwdriver to bedrock that looks like it's been worked clean by others, and pry it apart. It often comes up in sheets — and there's gold between the sheets, sometimes one to two feet below the bedrock surface. Then the hand dredge cleans out what you've opened up. That's how you find gold in ground everybody else thinks is played out.

Build vs. buy — the honest call
Commercial hand dredges run $50–80. Your DIY build is about $25 and an afternoon. The commercial units have properly molded plungers and better handle ergonomics, and at 2" that ergonomics difference is more noticeable than on the smaller sniper. My honest advice: build one to learn the tool and prove you like hand dredging. If it becomes a regular part of your kit, buy a good one from one of the shops above and keep your homemade one as a loaner. Getting a friend into prospecting is worth more than the twenty-five bucks.
